Have you ever read something that, when you think about it later, is obvious – but at the time, it blows your mind?
I've been reading Atomic Habits by James Clear with my book club, Bookaholics Anonymous (which you can join for free here).
It's a magnificent book, and I scrawled pages of notes while I was reading it.
Mr Clear also made me sit up and go "bloody hell" or "aha! YES!" multiple times.
But what really blew my tiny mind was this:
Winners and losers have the same goals.
Holy shitballs, right? I mean, you may be thinking, "Well duh!" which is fair enough. But take a moment to really think about what it means.
We're all told to focus so hard on the goal, we forget about what gets us there.
If successful people and unsuccessful people all have the same goal, then the problem isn't the goal. The problem is what we're doing to make it happen.
I'm not saying goals don't matter; they do. We need a direction to head in or we're striving for the sake of it and going around in circles. What I'm saying is, set your goal – then forget about it.
When I'm coaching clients to write their books, that's what we do. We look at where they want to be and when they want to get there. We write it down and set the goal. Then we forget about it. Because I'm all about the Tiny Beetle Steps.
Once you know where you're going, the only thing you need to think about is taking the next step. And the next. And the next.
Write 100 or 500 or 1,000 or 5,000 words today.
Do it again tomorrow.
And the next day.
And the next.
That's how you write a book. Or how you train to compete in a trapeze competition. Or how you become able to run a marathon. Or how you learn to play the guitar.
One Tiny Beetle Step at a time.
Winners and losers have the same goals. The difference is what they do about it.
What are you going to do about your goal?
p.s. comment below and tell me your goal – whether it's writing a book or launching a product or learning a language. Then, and most crucially, tell me what you're going to do every single day to make it happen.
