Recruit friends to help you

Habits are easier to keep when people are cheering you on, right?

Take Spanish, for example.

I've been learning Spanish on Duolingo for a few months now, and I'm pretty good about practising regularly. But I miss the odd day.

I'm on a 14-day streak at the moment.

My friend Edd is learning Dutch on Duolingo... and he's on a 33-day streak.

This obviously bothers me because I am competitive.

Not really with him, but with myself. I think, 'Huh. I can keep up a long streak, too...' and it's helping.

Whenever I think I can't be bothered or I'm too busy, I remember that Edd is probably making time to learn Dutch – so I make time for Spanish.

Doing my little Spanish class every day is a habit, just like writing 750 words every day. I enjoy it.

But it's easier to stick to it and enjoy it when you have friends cheering you on, even if they're not learning the same language as you.

Doesn't matter what the habit you're building is; build a network of people just like you and hang onto them.

If you want to become a better writer, if you want to write a book, you'll need to build a writing habit.

I can help you, and I will – but if you can gather a couple of like-minded friends, you can build that habit together.

Your habit will be stronger, and on those occasions when you struggle to get started or you just can't be bothered, those friends will push you onwards and upwards.

p.s. I'm kicking off a free 29-day writing challenge on February 1st. You'll be able to sign up for it soon. Stay tuned...
