Did you know a mule could be many things?
It’s the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse and is usually infertile because donkeys and horses have different numbers of chromosomes — 62 for a donkey and 64 for a horse.
The mule has 63 chromosomes and sits in the middle, hence the usual infertility.
But there are exceptions like the mule that gave birth to a mule during Xerxes’ invasion of Greece in 480BC.
Or two offspring of a female mule called Old Bec in the late 1920s, in Texas.
Mules can also be:
- an obstinate person
- a courier for illegal drugs
- a hybrid plant or animal, especially a sterile one
- any of several standard cross-bred varieties of sheep
So, set a timer for 5 minutes and write about whatever comes into your head when you think of the word “mule.”
