I am a creature of routine and habit.
If someone fucks with my routine, I crumple into a damp little bundle.
So I set certain times to write because if we wait for inspiration to strike, well… we die of old age before we write what we want to write.
As Somerset Maugham said, “I write only when inspiration strikes. Fortunately it strikes every morning at nine o’clock sharp.”
But look, perhaps you’re not a morning person.
I am. Or at least, I want to be, so I get up.
But I also do some of my best writing at really inconvenient times when I have good ideas, like when I want to go to bed and it’s late.
So, when do you write?
Is that the best time for you?
Really?
Or is it just the time you feel you “should” write? When society tells you that’s acceptable?
Set a timer for 5 minutes and consider your writing habits.
If you don’t have a habit, make one — and the best way I know of to do this is in my live writing Power Hours.
You can join us for a week for just £1 to try us out — all the info is right here.
Happy writing!
