I've been working on a move on the trapeze for ages. Weeks.
I couldn't do it and it was tremendously frustrating – like one of those dreams where you're trying to shout but no sound comes out.
Then, suddenly, the other day I nailed it!
It felt like a giant leap forward and I rejoiced...
Only it wasn't a giant leap forward, at all. It was the result of all those weeks of trying and failing.
Every time I failed, I failed a little bit better.
Every time I got back on the trapeze, I improved a tiny little bit. Maybe just 1%. I took a tiny beetle step forward.
The thing about tiny beetle steps is, eventually they add up to great big leaps.
We get hung up on the great big leaps. We strive for massive improvements, to become an overnight success, and wish for miracles to happen fast.
When we're writing, we expect our first drafts to be magnificent, when actually they're always gonna be kind of shitty.
What if, instead, we simply aimed to get a teeny bit better every single day?
On every edit, we improve something. On every writing day, our style and tone gets better. Before we know it, we'll have made the giant leap we're striving for.
Make excellence a habit, in tiny beetle steps.
